The Klados Winery is a small family business, that was started in 1997.
The founder, Manolis Klados, is a qualified Chemist and trained master Oenologist, with 30 years experience in the industry, who pioneered wine making in the prefecture of Rethymno. He is now being succeeded by his son, Stelios, who grew up in the business and who is a graduate chemist from the University of Crete and a master Oenologist from the University of Piacenza - Italy and daughter Magda, who is a graduate IT engineer, who does the company accounting and administration.
The first winery was set up in small rented premises, located in the outskirts of the city of Rethymno, with a production capacity of 20,000 Litres/year, that grew over time. The early activity was mainly Bag-in-Box and the first serious consumer branding with bottled products started in 2002.
Business grew steadily and as the existing production capacity was outgrown, the business was relocated in 2007, in purpose built family owned premises, with a capacity of 100.000 Litres/year, in the area of Panormo, 25 km east of the city of Rethymno.
The new winery was equipped with modern technology, in both wine making and bottling, enabling the processing of greater volumes and higher standards of quality.
The winery is surrounded by our new organic vineyard, planted with the famous Rethymnian white grape variety of ''Vidiano''.
We continue to market out wine both, to business, bag in box and to consumers, in bottles. We are a boutique winery and strive to make superior quality wines, that would intrigue our demanding consumers with their complex aromas, attractive colours and great tastes.
We are vinifying, the better known local red varieties of Liatiko, Kotsifali and the noble ones of, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Syrah.
On whites, we are vinifying the excellent local varieties of Vidiano, Vilana, Plito, Thrapsathiri, Muscat of Spina, and the noble Sauvignon Blanc.
We have the facilities to receive and entertain visitors, individuals or groups.
If you a wine enthusiast, or simply a novice, come spend time with us and have a walk in our vineyard, see our winemaking process technology and share a bite and a glass of wine with us.
The logo of the company, which depicts a hawk on a branch, is inextricably linked with both the Klados family and the wider area around the Klados winery. The branch is associated with the family, since the family name "klados", derived from an ancient word, refers directly to branch. The "Hawk", an imposing and majestic bird, is found in abundance in the habitat around the winery while looking for its food. Also, this bird protects the vineyard, preventing attacks of other birds against the mature grapes. Finally, the Hawk has a great historical and mythological importance since, according to a Cretan tradition; it took over the protection and upbringing of Zeus in the Ideon Andron, a cave a few kilometers away from the winery.
The Klados Winery is located near the village of Skepasti, which is situated 25km, east of the city of Rethymnon. It is at a distance of 1,5km from the Panormo exit and about 10km from that of Bali.
To reach the winery, leave at the Panormo exit on the Heraklion- Rethymnon highway, and follow the ( Klados Winery ), signs located at all turning points that will lead you to the site of the Winery.
You can also reach us by bus which does a regular service to the village of Panormo, 1km away and a taxi from there. The bus ride is 40minutes.
The winery is built in farmland and is surrounded by a young vineyard planted with the famous Rethymnon white grape variety of 'Vidiano' and olive groves. The main crop of the area is olive oil and in the summer melons and water melons that can be seen on traders desks on the main road, along the Panormo junction.
Our site offers unobstructed views to the surrounding hills and valleys, over looking the mount of 'Psiloreitis' in the south east, the village of Skepasti to the east and Perama to the south. It is open land and exposed to both southerly and northerly winds, that can be a nuisance particularly in the summer. The last 1km of access road leaving the motorway, is a narrow mudtruck and needs to be handled with care. It goes through spectacular old olive groves and beautiful colorful wild flowers.
The sightseeings of our area apart from the beautiful coast line of the Cretan Sea, are the villages of Panormo and Bali, beaches, souvenir shops, and tavernas where one can sample Cretan delicacies and fresh local wine. Close by is the celebrated Geropotamos beach. For those interested in history, there are the ruins of ancient Eleftherna, one of the oldest cities of Crete and the Melidoni cave with its ancient as well as modern history and natural beauty, located near their respective modern villages. Finally, only a few kilometres from our winery you can find the traditional village Margarites. With history that spans over centuries, it is one of the greatest centers for pottery in Greece.
